Hampshire 2004 County Air Rifle and Pistol Competition
Wow ! Well done Robert Alderman and Matt Carrig winning Gold in their age groups also Nathan Greenaway, Pierre Reader and Peter Alderman who made their way through the eliminators into the finals. Robert Chester also qualified but did not shoot in the finals.
Robert led off in the youngest section by shooting three cards 36,31 and 29 giving a score of 67 for the best two cards to claim gold, beating Sam Pidgley of 1st Bishops Waltham (62) by five, with Jack Dorkins of 61st Central Portsmouth taking Bronze with 42. Sam and Robert are now set for good future competition at the field shoot and the Nationals this year.
Nathan Greenaway came in with a score of 21 in his group giving a creditable 15th place for his first competition. As practice makes perfect, get to it Nathan!
The under eighteen age group had our best number of finalists, Matt, Pierre and Peter. Matts cards, 44,43 and 40 giving 87 for the two best cards and gold medal position. Leading Philip Hobbs (81) and Steven Waters (79) both from Hook ESU. An off peak Pierre ended up 7th with 75 his best cards not to his usual standard. Peter Alderman claimed 11th position (65) just missing out from the top half of the table. Matts score was the top score of the day beating the senior group (over eighteen) and much to Scrolin's disgust his best card beat Scrolin's TOTAL score. I now wait to be beaten by Matt at .22 rimfire.
An article in the paper today tells of the England Rugby Captain, Martin Johnsons talk at a dinner for the English Cricket Team. He emphaised the need for thorough preparation and stressed that a high standard of competition was crucial in creating a successful team. One of his messages was that in the last 20 minutes of the World Cup Final with the pressure on, it was the previous year of hard preparation that enabled them to win. So the message that we as Riflemen can get from this is that we must train hard, plan your training, enter competitions and build a mind set that says " I can and will do better" Think ahead to the District Competition, Field Shoot and the Nationals, Start working NOW!
Next……Bill Cook…………
Shackleton Troop kindly gave up their Troop Night to allow the Rifle Club to invite Bill Cook to give a talk on the history of the Scout National Rifle Competition. Bill in another life a long time ago started and ran the competition, now run by John Dohoo (get you entry in now for this year). The talk was very well received. We also had the pleasure of guest attending, one of which took part in the original competition. Bill was invited to Liphook after he wrote to us after last years competition, He also offered to bring along his collection of Daisy BB Air Rifle plus some old air rifles. As Bill now lives in Petersfield District he has an interest in Liphook made very clear by his gift to the Rifle Club of three of the Daisy rifles!!! We are now charged with looking after and shooting them! The Rifles were presented to the club on a Thursday club night at which we had the opportunity to shoot them. A competition was organised and Robert Alderman came out tops. The purpose was to find a recipient for an original Daisy Base Ball Cap, well done Robert.
Bill will be with us again on the 8th April when he will bring along Daisy air pistols. At this shoot we will make Bill an honorary member of the club. Please be there.
